2003 was one of the warmest summers on record, temperatures hitting 40 degrees through July and August.
Our clay soils came to our rescue - holding in water & insulating the terroir against the excessive heat. We harvested at the earliest date on record (at the time!); starting picking on the 4th of September.
The wine retains a superb mineral freshness as well as a wonderful ripe concentration. A rare treat to drink top, aged fine wine, limited stocks remaining!

Our Grand Vin is our flagship wine, crafted by winemaker Thierry Garnaud, formerly a cellar master at Cheval Blanc.
Using traditional methods and careful aging in French oak. A blend of approximately 95% Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Pressac, it expresses the finesse of our terroir and the elegance Château Canon Chaigneau has stood for across two millennia.
Our Unique Terroir
Château Canon Chaigneau is located then in the eastern side of the Lalande de Pomerol appellation on the Néac plateau, and just to the north of the Pomerol Plateau, where the likes of Petrus, Lafleur, la Conseillante and Clinet can be found.
Indeed, the Romans recognised the greatness of our terroir, and winemaking began here almost 2000 years ago....
Our Legendary Winemaker
Thierry Garnaud is responsible for such 100 Point Legends as the '90, '98, '00, '03, '05, '06, '08, '10, '15 & '16. His savoir-faire and talent is undisputed!
Thierry lovingly crafts the Grand Vin and our newer, unoaked creation, Cuve 8a, wine with the same passion & alchemy that he had at Cheval Blanc the wines share the same ‘iron fist in velvet glove’ structure & sensuality!
His methods are clearly his own; but the premise is one of letting the vines and the grapes do the talking, with minimal intervention, and according to traditional methods.
